The Dark Mother of the Deep
(Nigredo – Coniunctio)

The Dark Mother of the Deep belongs to the time of nigredo.
She emerges where light no longer comes first, where the subject is dissolved within its own psychic matter.

This body is not a living body, but an alchemical body: a vessel.
A container for that which, within being, cannot be thought without first being undergone.
Stoneware, gofun, bone, brass, and leather form a composite substance, analogous to the soul itself—made of layers, resistances, and archaic memories.

The figure is articulated, yet immobile.
This immobility is essential: it marks the arrest of the ego, the suspension of will, the moment when the self can no longer advance without undoing itself.
The joints become psychic thresholds—sites of fracture, but also of passage—where opposites cease to struggle and enter into fertile tension.

The excessive human hair plunges downward like a descent into the unconscious.
It materializes the pull of the chthonic, the gravity of the Dark Mother, whom Jung names the archetype of the primordial Feminine: matrix, abyss, and ground of all transformation.

The Dark Mother is not a maternal figure in the affective sense.
She is the matrix of individuation.
She who devours old forms so that the subject may cease to identify with its conscious image.
She is both womb and tomb, the place where the soul is returned to its formless state.

The structures that constrain the body are neither restraints nor instruments of domination: they are alchemical ligatures.
They hold the elements together during the operation, preventing psychic dispersion and allowing the slow cooking of being.

In this work, marriage is not a pacified union.
It is a coniunctio oppositorum, a violent alliance between the human and the divine, the conscious and the unconscious, form and formlessness.
This marriage does not save: it transforms.

The Dark Mother of the Deep promises no redemption.
She demands descent, the acceptance of darkness, the loss of certainties.
But within this night, another verticality is already being prepared.
For every true nigredo already contains the possibility of gold.
